Don't cheat baby boomers on health care

TORONTO -
As a baby boomer, I'm tired of the scare tactics. We're told we have to reform health and pensions because boomers are aging - and are about to consume more than our fair share of health and pension cash.

A reality check on Mexico. The new Global Economic Reality

Posted by Thomas Green in Untagged

Thomas Green
I found this article very interesting and wanted to share it with You. By Bob Miller.

First: A reality check on Mexico

Mexico is in a unique position to reap many of the benefits of the decline of the US economy. In order to not violate NAFTA and other agreements the U.S.A. cannot use direct protectionism, so it is content to allow the media to play this protectionist role. The U.S. media – over the last year – has portrayed Mexico as being on the brink of economic collapse and civil war. The Mexican people are either beheaded, kidnapped, poor, corrupt, or narco-traffickers. The American news media was particularly aggressive in the weeks leading up to spring break. The main reason for this is money. During that two-week period, over 120,000 young American citizens poured into Mexico and left behind hundreds of millions of dollars.

Let’s look at the reality of the massive drug and corruption problem, kidnappings, murders and money. The U.S. Secretary of State Clinton was clear in her honest assessment of the problem. “Our insatiable demand for illegal drugs fuels the drug trade. Our inability to prevent the weapons from being illegally smuggled across the border to arm these criminals causes the deaths of police officers, soldiers and civilians,” Clinton said. The other large illegal business that is smuggled into the U.S.A. that no one likes to talk about is Human Traffic for prostitution. This “business” is globally now competing with drugs in terms of profits.

Manzanillo Mexico Real Estate - A Safe Bet with beautiful results

People who are looking to purchase vacation real estate are always trying to find the next new big thing. This may seem like a good idea to some, but to those who know how to make successful business decisions, this is actually a flawed idea. Here is the problem. If you find a place that is the next big thing, you will be paying a lot for unimpressive property. There may be a period in which there is a bubble. This means that value will soar through the roof. You will feel good about the property. Then one of two things will happen. The value will plateau, or as happens more often, the value will actually decline as more and more people leave because of high prices and big crowds. So what is the answer? You should look into Manzanillo Mexico real estate.

Saint Patrick's Day is a yearly holiday celebrated on March 17. It is named after Saint Patrick, the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland.  Saint Patrick's Day  is Also called St Patrick's Day, St Paddy's Day, Patrick's Day, Paddy's Day.

During the days masses aree celebrated at Buenos Aires Irish churches and throughout the Buenos Aires province.

The Argentinians also have a historic tight to Ireland becaue one of Argentina's forefathers,Admiral William Brown, who was born in Foxford in 1777, commanded a squadron of seven ships, on Saint Patrick's Day in 1841, he captured the fort of Martin Garcia, called "The Gibraltar of the La Plata".

Following many successful battles, Admiral Willliam Brown known as Admirante Guillermo Brown acted as Argentine Commissioner throughout the Independence wars and even more he's doings seated - when at the close of the war- the Liberty of Buenos Aires by the treaty of Montevideo on October 4th 1827. Brown's victories in the Independence War, the Argentina-Brazil War, and the Guerra Grande in Uruguay earned the respect and appreciation of the Argentine people, and today he is regarded as one of Argentina's national heroes. Creator and first admiral of the country's maritime forces, he is commonly known as the "father of the Argentine Navy"

Tiger Woods has been on leave from professional golf, but his widely reported personal problems are not the reason for delays in launching a luxury development  located on a peninsula outside Ensenada, Mexico, about 90 miles south of San Diego, CA.

With views of the ocean at every tee or green, the Tiger Woods golf course is the centerpiece of the development planned at the tip of the Punta Banda peninsula overlooking Todos Santos Bay. The project includes 120 units, with prices starting at $3 million for a lot and $3.5 million for a condominium, according to information released at the project’s unveiling.

Why Mexico Real Estate is the best choice of Canadians Citizens

Posted by Thomas Green in Untagged

Thomas Green
I totally agree with Tom Budniak who wrote the following.

For many years, Mexico Real Estate has been the #1 destination for Canadian retirees looking for retirement homes. Sunny climate, fabulous beaches and good lifestyle are some of the reasons why Canadians come to Mexico. But now, because of one additional factor, Mexico retirement homes are becoming even more attractive. The factor is a strong Canadian dollar. A strong Canadian dollar means increased buying power while buying real estate in Mexico because, in international real estate market the currency used is US dollars. The continued strengthening of Canadian dollars means that Canadian citizens can buy more luxurious and spacious retirement homes with even more lifestyle amenities and conveniences. Alternatively, a Canadian retiree can buy a Mexican retirement condo a lot cheaper then it was a year back. With Mexico Real Estate prices offered at reduced prices due to worldwide recession, it means at least thousands of dollars of savings.

HAVANA, Sep 21 (IPS) - Although it was the target of threats from radical Cuban exiles and the focus of controversy and opinion polls from the moment it was announced, Colombian musician Juanes' idea of staging his "Peace without Borders" concert in Cuba proved a success at promoting understanding, in spite of differences.

Over one million people, most of them dressed in white, for peace, and sheltering from the sun under multi-coloured umbrellas, crowded into Revolution Square in Havana, the scene of many political rallies in the last 50 years. This time, however, they were not shouting slogans and waving placards but singing and dancing euphorically.

The music venue in a cow pasture in New York state that defined a decade, Woodstock, turns 40 years old this weekend. Approximately a half million mostly young, college-age people attended the 32 act music festival. Greats like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Joan Baez, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, CCR entertained the rain and mud covered, ‘hazy’ revelers. The event lasted 3 days, even longer for those who had to figure out where they were.

Mexico Vs USA World Cup qualifier soccer match will be today in Mexico City at the Azteca Stadium.  After the previous match in New Jersey where Mexico won 5-0 what is expected in this match? To me it is very interesting.

I know that today at 3.00 P.M in Mexico there is nothing more important than this match. And maybe for us Americans  living in Mexico is the same.

As an American living in Mexico, when the USA plays against Mexico I always split my heart. Today I think that Mexico will win and Mexico need to win more than the USA.

All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten: Uncommon Thoughts on Common Things. Is a great book by Robert Fulghum, that I do recommend You to read.  I have read it many times, yet each time I read it I find myself saying "If we could just remeber and practice the basics of the basics - We learned them in Kidergarten."

Some of the rules Mr.Fulghum talks about in All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten: Uncommon Thoughts on Common Things are: + Share everything + Don't hit people + Put things back where you found them + Play fair  + Clean up your own mess
+ Don't take things that aren't yours + Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody
+ Wash your hands before you eat + Flush...

Nearly 1 million Californians seek medical care in Mexico annually

Posted by Thomas Green in UCLA , prescription drugs , Mexico Medical Tourism , Mexico health services , Medicare , Medical Tourism , medical nsurace , Medical Abroad , Health Tourism , Health care , Health Abroad , dental care , California

Thomas Green
Driven by rising health care costs at home, nearly 1 million Californians cross the border each year to seek medical care in Mexico, according a new paper by UCLA researchers and colleagues published in the journal Medical Care.

An estimated 952,000 California adults sought medical, dental or prescription services in Mexico annually, and of these, 488,000 were Mexican immigrants, according to the research paper, "Heading South: Why Mexican Immigrants in California Seek Health Services in Mexico."

The paper is the first large-scale population-based research ever published on U.S. residents who travel to Mexico for health services. It is based on an analysis of 2001 data from the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS), the nation's largest state health survey.

"What the research shows is that many Californians, especially Mexican immigrants, go to Mexico for health services," said lead author Steven P. Wallace, associate director of the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, which conducts CHIS. "We already know that immigrants use less health care overall than people born in the U.S. Heading south of the border further reduces the demand on U.S. facilities."

Cost and lack of insurance were primary reasons both Mexican and non-Mexican U.S. residents sought health services across the border.

Both "long-stay" Mexican immigrants (those in the U.S. for more than 15 years) and "short-stay" immigrants (less than 15 years) have high rates of uninsurance: 51.5 percent of short-stay immigrants and 29 percent of long-stay immigrants do not have medical insurance.

"This points to the importance of expanding work-based insurance in health care reform, since virtually all Mexican immigrants are in working families," said co-author Xochitl Casteñada, director of the Health Initiative of the Americas at the University of California, Berkeley.

Both short-stay and long-stay immigrants have even higher rates of uninsurance for dental care: 77.6 percent and 51.6 percent, respectively.

Not surprisingly, dental care was the most common service obtained by immigrants.

Among non-Latino whites, prescription drugs were the most common medical service obtained in Mexico.

Long-stay immigrants used Mexican health services the most, with 15 percent reporting crossing the border during a year's time for health services. Half of these long-stay immigrants lived far — more than 120 miles — from the border.

Long-stay immigrants are more likely to be documented than short-stay immigrants, Wallace noted, which makes it easier for them to travel back and forth to Mexico.

Short-stay immigrants — those most likely to be undocumented — were also the least likely to need medical care in all areas, with one exception: mental health.

"Undocumented immigrants tend to be younger, stronger and consequently healthier," Wallace said. "But they are also the most stressed out, as many are struggling economically, culturally and linguistically."

Short-stay immigrants who sought treatment in Mexico were more often women and were more likely to tell their doctor they were feeling "sad or down."

Other findings:

Immigrants who travel to Mexico for health services are not necessarily the poorest. One explanation: The cost of travel may offset any financial savings, creating a disincentive for the very poor to travel.
Although cost was the primary factor in seeking health services, cultural and linguistic barriers and immigration factors were also important motivators.
How often immigrants cross the border to Mexico for health services is particularly relevant to efforts to create and expand binational health insurance plans, Wallace said.

Since 2000, several private insurance companies and at least one employer group have developed such plans, which cover an estimated 150,000 California workers who use Mexican medical facilities near the border.

These plans may be both more cost-effective for employers and more culturally relevant for participants, Wallace said.

"To the extent that binational plans encourage more people to access preventative and other health care, they should be encouraged," he said.
