President Calderon Visits Playa del Carmen and CancunPosted by: Thomas Lloyd in MyBlog on Jun 8, 2009 |
President Calderon began his tour with an event in the Hotel Hacienda Tres Rios located within Playa del Carmen. Later in the week, Ms. Margarita Calderon was in Cancun attending an event in the Ritz Carlton while the president was in the water park Xcaret, participating in the world day of ecology
While touring in the city, they were also invited to be involved in the inauguration of the new resort hotel called Las Grand Velas All Suites & Spa Resorts. This large new complex is located just north of Playa del Carmen and south of the Mayakoba Golf course. The tour will end with a visit to Costa Maya, Majahual to review the newly rebuilt cruise ship pier and new boardwalk in the downtown section of this town.
The president’s tour here in Quintana Roo is also supported with a national advertising campaign called VIVE Mexico which is designed to jump start the tourism industry. In the spring of 2009, with the world economic downturn, the travel warning that were distributed by the US on the drug wars in Mexico, and then with the Swine Flu scare in the April May months, the tourism markets of Mexico faced some of the lowest occupancy rates seen in over 10 years. The federal government, along with various state governments have been putting together advertising strategies which will be released world wide throughout the remainder of 2009 in preparation for the 2010 season.
