![]() East Cape and Los Barriles is the Fishing man´s paradise. For some reason the waters near los Barriles Baja California are just right and attract a large variety of game fish, from marlin to yellowfin tuna. The fishing season starts in May and ends in October, but in reality fishing is good year round. It is located about 45 minutes north east of the Airport in San Jose del Cabo. The East Cape and Los Barriles StoryLos Barriles is known to have been the hideaway for many of Hollywood´s greats, like Clark Gable and John Wayne. Lost Barriles and neighboring East Cape are idea for people looking to get away from the average tourist trap. It is a very small community with a small number of foreigners coming to visit or to live here.
Los Barriles (the Barrels) was for hundreds of years a small fishing village, and ships would come into the area to fill their barrels with fresh water, hence the name. Los Barriles was influenced by local native indan tribes, the Spanish Conquistadors, European tradesmen and most recently by modern developers. Still Los Barriles and East Cape have managed to remain quiet and almost untouched. The town has relatively avoided the negative aspects of change, and still boasts its original charm. Just because Los Barriles is small doesn’t mean it doesn’t have the modern amenities people need. There are some nice restaurants in the area, 2 grocery stores, and several Taco stands. This is the ideal location for people that want to get away from it all and run off to that deserted island. The advantage, is that East Cape and Los Barriles is easily accesible for a deserted island, and there are a few commodities that make life all that much easier. ![]() Beginning just north of San José, the East Cape stretches nearly a hundred miles along the Sea of Cortés eastward and northward past Los Barriles. This beautiful stretch of desert coastline is still mostly undeveloped, however the towns of Los Barriles and Buena Vista are thriving fishing and tourist communities offering lodging, local cuisine and pangas to rent for a day of casting your line into the deep. The East Cape is also the windsurfing center of Los Cabos, as well as being home to the more remote Cabo Pulmo, a marine park that draws divers to the only living coral reef in the Northern Pacific. The East Cape region is in a word, idyllic, known for its truly amazing sunrises, calm waters and endless sandy beaches. With the coral reef at Cabo Pulmo setting the stage, it is nirvana for the lucky few who live here year round. Today, the demand for individual lots is at an all-time high, and that’s not going to change. Drive north to Los Barriles and you’ll find it is unlike Cabo San Lucas or San José del Cabo or anywhere in between, for that matter. It is a sandy, laid-back beach town nestled in a calm bay, with an array of outdoor activities right at your doorstep. Ideal for the more adventurous among us, families of all shapes and sizes, and those that fish with a passion, the real estate market in Los Barriles is explosive. The unprecedented demand for properties shows no sign of slowing down. With prices a fraction of those in The Corridor, beachfront and residential land is in high demand, and if there were more finished homes, those would be as well. Developers and smart investors are taking advantage of the land prices, and it won’t be long before the options for real estate in Los Barriles will include new condominiums and hotels. What is driving this expansion on the East Cape? For one, the opening of the sophisticated Puerto Los Cabos Marina in San José has fueled the interest and paved the way for upscale developers who are planning ultra-exclusive beach and golf resort communities. The amount of property that has been purchased on the Cape within the last 24 months is unprecedented. Conservative estimates are that over 25,000 acres have been sold in excess of US$200 million. The biggest developments on the Cape will be the Mayan Resorts, just beyond Puerto Los Cabos; El Rincón, just beyond Cabo Pulmo’s coral reefs; La Ribera, the site of the next biggest marina development on the Cape; and La Capilla in Los Barriles. These names may sound strange to you now, but they will be the future homes to the newest resort communities in Los Cabos.
