Destinations - Huatulco
altHuatulco weather is milder compared to other beach areas, with temperatures that remain at around 90 degrees Fahrenheit year round. The Huatulco bays contrary to the open ocean are calm, caressing waters that caress fine corral sand.

The Greener the Better!
People flock here to buy Huatulco real estate because of the weather, but ecologists hate to think of  another great natural wonder being exploited and over developed. The Mexican government on the other hand, doesn’t plan on developing the natural wonder of Huatulco, but areas that are inland. There are currently a few homes and upscale hotels located on the bays themselves though.

Plans are to make the nine bays of Huatulco with its 100,000 acres of forest, both an ecological and tourist paradise. The plans are to finish this development in 2020.

History of Huatulco

Huatulco was known by the Aztecs and those that came before them and the meaning of the name is “land where a tree is worshipped.” Actually Huatulco has one of the most intriguing legends in all of Mexico.

It is said that when the Spanish came to the bays the Indians, showed them a large wooden cross, located at the edge of the bay which they worshipped.  The Spanish left the cross, and made Huatulco a port. This port began attracting other foreigners like Thomas Cavendish in 1587, and Francis Drake in 1579. It is said that Cavendish believed this cross to be the work of the devil, and ordered it to be chopped and burned to the ground, but the tree would not let itself be burned, so then Cavendish looped mooring ropes around the cross, and tried to pull it down, but could not. He sailed away in frustration leaving the cross still standing.

Later in the early 17th century Bishop Juan de Cervantes brought a small part of the cross to the Cathedral of the Capital of Oaxaca. It is said that this piece is still venerated at the cathedrals altar in lent.

Huatulco Today!

This area was relatively uninhabited and unreachable until 1982 when the Hwy 200 was built.  A few years later the town of Crucecita altwith a population of 10,000 was founded. The bay of Santa Cruz has now been developed but the only other bay that has development is Tangolunda. The other bays can be enjoyed by taking quick day trips. Huatulco real estate development projects continue to grow, but are all made in such a way as to be ecologically friendly.

Tangolunda currently has a golf course, a shopping area and five resort hotels which have been operating since the 1990´s.  The area’s isolation has made Huatulco into an ecological paradise. Huatulco weather is mild the beaches are clean, and the bays a clear, clean blue. This is a great place for those that love scuba diving, kayaking, windsurfing, sailing, snorkeling and any of the water sports.

Why Buy Huatulco Real Estate?

Boomers that retire in this area are usually people that love active lifestyles but want the tranquil setting of small town life. This is the place you want to be to get away from it all. Currently there is an airport, where international flights come in, but it is quite a distance from the nearest city. By land it takes about 6 to 8 hours to reach Oaxaca.  Even with this paradise being located at a relative distance from any major city, beach lovers enjoy living here because of the many activities, the friendly people, and because of the mild Huatulco weather.
