About San Felipe Baja California, Mexico

altSan Felipe was first found 1721 by the Jesuit Juan de Ugarte,  who was out exploring. But it wasn’t mapped out for another 25 years by another Jesuit called Fernando Consag.  It was in this century that the Dominicans tried to establish a supply post in San Felipe but they were soon run out by the Yuma Indians.

Today San Felipe has all the modern amenities anyone could ever want. The community has electricity, cellular, and land lines.  Its easy to find a salon, a video store, and even a Laundromat. There is even an indoor theatre. People retiring from the States mingle with the locals easily, and find the residents friendly and helpful. San Felipe is an ideal location for boomers looking to retire, because of the new developments going up in the area, and because of its proximity to the United States.

San Felipe Baja California Today!

SAN FELIPE ... a remote desert community enjoying the benefits of a warm, dry, winter climate, and a hot, humid (Florida-like) summer. The Sea of Cortez is one of the world's most prolific salt-water habitats with sport fishing tours being available for avid anglers.

Located 125 miles south of the International border between Calexico, California and Mexicali, Baja California, the primary route to San Felipe is via Mexico's Federal Highway 5. A secondary route exists via Tijuana following Highway 1 south to Ensenada, Highway 3 east to Highway 5 and south from there to San Felipe.

The largest major metropolitan area with good airline and transportation connections is San Diego, about 5 hours
drive by car north-west of San Felipe.

Geopolitically a part of the Mexicali municipality, San Felipe depends upon tax-based funding for all its public services. It is governed locally by a "Delegado" (Mayor), representing Mexicali's Presidente, who is responsible for all municipal matters.

San Felipe Baja Information

Unquestionably the premier destination on the west coast of the Sea of Cortez in Baja is San Felipe. It is about 120 miles south of the border.

Though sleepy, in comparison to its west coast counterparts, San Felipe has been a secret destination to those in the know. Activities for tourists are many and varied. They include world class fishing, boating, hiking, swimming, wind surfing, sailing, scuba diving, parasailing, and dune buggy trips, with restaurants and night clubs for evening enjoyment.

Boomers Living Abroad

A number that has grown steadily over the past decade, and it is expected to more than double within ten years. In the next 20 years, 100 million baby boomers, from the USA and Canada, are going to retire. Five million baby boomers turn age 60 each year, Ten Thousand per day, Eight per minute, and scores of them are purchasing property abroad as vacation homes or investment homes.
