Benque Viejo del Carmen, located in the Cayo District in the country of Belize, is quite unique as it was first established by immigrants from Guatemala. Benque Viejo is a suburban settlement with schools, supermarkets, and other facilities important to foreigners coming to the area. It is a great quiet place, a great place to reach out to help the community. Benque Viejo is the most sizable settlement furthest to west in Belize. It lies about 130 km west of Belize City. Most people find Benque Viejo quite interesting, as there are ancient Maya ruins there, called Xuhantunich. For baby boomers who love archeology and ancient artifacts, this is the place to go. In the area flows the Mopan River, where film director Caleb Botton featured the town as the backdrop it in his feature “7 Days in Carmel”. Learn More
