Dangriga is the largest town in southern Belize. It is located within the art of the country’s citrus industry, and was formerly known as Stann Creek Town. It is the home and cultural center of the Garifuna people in Belize. It has a population of 10,000. It is considered one of the prettiest and most colorful of Belize’s district towns.

It is also a great place to experience the unique Garifuna culture. These people are black caribs; people of South American and African descent, whose ancestor’s inhabitant the islands of St. Vicent. Dangriga is a town that explodes dancing, drinking, colorful customs, and the celebration of Garifuna heritage. It is also where the Caribbean music, Punta Rock, originated and where some Belize’s best folk bands can be found.

altDangriga was settled during the beginning of the 19th century by the Garinagu, also known as the Black Caribs, descendants of the Africa.  For a long time this was one of the largest populations in the country, second only to Belize City. For a long time with was known as Stann Creek town, but in recent  years was renamed Dangriga, a Garifuna word, which means "standing waters".

The culture of the area has had many influences, but comes mainly from African shipwrecked slaves, and native Caribs.  Today the Garifuna (descendants of Africans) speak the Carib language but still keep their African and musical traditions.
