Dangriga was settled during the beginning of the 19th century by the Garinagu, also known as the Black Caribs, descendants of the Africa.  For a long time this was one of the largest populations in the country, second only to Belize City. For a long time with was known as Stann Creek town, but in recent  years was renamed Dangriga, a Garifuna word, which means "standing waters".

The culture of the area has had many influences, but comes mainly from African shipwrecked slaves, and native Caribs.  Today the Garifuna (descendants of Africans) speak the Carib language but still keep their African and musical traditions.
