About the Riviera Maya
The Riviera Maya falls along the Mexican Caribbean coastline off Quintana Roo, Mexico. It originally started with Playa del Carmen and ended at Tulum, but now also includes Puerto Morelos, Cancun and Felipe Carrillo Puerto. The Riviera Maya sits along coastal highway 400. This area is best known for its all inclusive resorts and small hotels near the beach. There are also many luxurious homes and luxury villa rentals in the area. In the next twenty years the Mexican government plans on developing several more medium sied cities of between 100,000 to 200,000 inhabitants. Towns that are now undergoing substantial development include, Puerto Aventuras, Puerto Morelos, Chemuyil and Akumal. The Riviera Maya is a virtual paradise for people that love aquatic sports. Divers love one of the local attractions known as the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System or the Belize Barrier Reef. This reef full of the most wonderful marine life starts in Cancun and goes south to Guatemala, and is the second longest in the whole world.

![]() The Riviera Maya, just as Cancun, has positioned itself as the main beach destination nationwide. Currently, it has roughly 35,000 hotel rooms - well above the 28,200 found in Cancun. The municipalities included in the Riviera Maya have shown the greatest population growth in the country in the last five years, at average rates of 18%.
In the last two decades, Playa del Carmen, the main location on the Riviera Maya, has become one of the main tourist resorts in the country, turning into a city that offers hotels in every category. Based on investment projections, construction of tourist super projects will continue throughout the region.
