San Miguel de Allende was founded in 1542 by a Franciscan monk, Fray Juan de San miguel. There were actually two settlements founded by Fray Juan. The first called San Miguel Viejo where he first settled among the chichimecas. This area was located on what is now the other side of the rail road tracks. Water became scarce here, so while walking with his dogs, he came across what is now known as the famous park  ¨el Chorro.¨ He moved his settlement here and called it San Miguel el Viejo. MORE

San Miguel is located on the semi-arid high plains of Central Mexico, near the area known as the Bajío. Geographically, it is almost the center of Mexico, making it easily accessible by air or road.


 
Getting Here
            Airports in Guanajuato (south of Leon, a 1.5 hour drive from San Miguel) and Mexico City (a 3 hour drive) receive direct international flights. Guanajuato’s airport is served by Aeromexico, Mexicana, Continental Delta and American Airlines with flights from Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and Los Angeles. 

            National flights are available to the airport in Queretaro, only an hour drive away from San Miguel. A number of local companies offer shuttle services to all airports, or you can charter transportation to meet your arrival.

San Miguel de Allende lies to the south of Mexico’s central high plain, and is close to the agricultural area known as the Bajio. It is easily accessible by air or on land, as there are direct international flights to the Guanajuato International Airport from Dallas, Houston, and Atlanta. The Guanajuato International Airport is the main airport in the state of Guanajuato, and it serves as the regional airport for other cities in the Bajio.

            On July 7, 2008, San Miguel de Allende was registered by UNESCO in the Cultural Heritage of Humanity; this distinction was awarded due to both its cultural and architectural contributions to the Mexican Baroque and its importance in Mexico’s fight for independence from Spain.
