Colon is a seaport on the Caribbean Sea Coast of Panama. The city lies near the Atlantic entrance to the Panama Canal.

Colon was traditionally located entirely on Manzanillo Island, surrounded by Limon Bay, Manzanillo Bay, and Folks River. Since the establishment of the Canal Zone, the city’s limits have been refined. The city was founded by Americans in 1850 as the Atlantic terminus of the Panama Railroad, then under construction to meet the gold rush demand for a fast route to California.

Colon is an important port, commercial center, and tourist destination. It was made a free trade zone in 1953 and is the world’s second largest duty free port.    Learn More

The History of Colon

This city was founded in 1850, but not by the Spanish, or by the indigenous people of the area, but by Americans working on the Panama railroad. For a while it was called Aspinwall after oneof the railway builders, but in the 1890´s the name was changed to Colon, after Christopher columbus. When the railway was complete, this city became an important port. The city was built on an island and when the first canal was built the city´s sanitation system went through a complete overhaul.
