Panama Awards Excavation Contract to a joint Venture

The Panama Canal Authority awarded the fourth and final contract  to FCC-ICA-MECO, a joint venture between Spanish, Mexican and Puerto Rican engineering companies.

The contract is the second-largest in the canal expansion plan after a $3.12 billion tender to build two new sets of locks--one on the Pacific side of the canal and one on the Atlantic. The contract will help create an access channel linking the new Pacific locks with the Canal’s existing Gaillard Cut, which is the narrowest stretch of the Panama Canal.

The project includes excavating 26 million cubic meters of unclassified excavation, installing a backfilled cellular cofferdam water barrier and building an earth-rock filled dam that will create part of the access channel’s eastern bank.

The $5.25 billion Panama Canal expansion project, scheduled for completion in 2014, is one of the biggest infrastructure megaprojects in Latin America. It will build a new lane of traffic along the canal through the new locks, doubling the canal's capacity and allowing passage for longer and wider ships.

Boomers Living Abroad

The number of Americans and Canadians living abroad, by today's count approximately 7 million (according to The Washington Post), is twice the population of Chicago and greater than that of 33 U.S. States. A number that has grown steadily over the past decade, and it is expected to more than double within ten years. In the next 20 years, 100 million baby boomers, from the USA and Canada, are going to retire. Five million baby boomers turn age 60 each year, Ten Thousand per day, Eight per minute, and scores of them are purchasing property abroad as vacation homes or investment homes. Naturally, many of them are auditioning these homes for potential primary retirement residences.
