A Glimpse At Hearing Aids Then And Now

Posted by Mary Albert in Untagged

Mary Albert

Whenever you lose your hearing, you shouldn’t lose your hope too.  This is good news to the one in ten Americans who suffer from some type of hearing loss.  It means that there are a lot of hearing aids on the market today.  While hearing aids are nothing new, the way that they now look is definitely new in a refreshing kind of way.

Hearing aids date back to the 1800's when people used a funnel shaped cone to amplify sound.  This is what was known either as an “ear horn” or as a “hear trumpet.”  Then there was a hearing aid that utilized earphones and a microphone but since it plugged into a desk, it wasn’t portable.  Now, with today’s technology hearing aids are small, portable and well-hidden while offer you great sound quality too.  So, as you can see, hearing aids have come quite a long way over the course of time.

There are now four basic types of hearing aids that you can choose from.  These include:
·    Conventional hearing aids, which are the type that are worn behind your ear.  These are the original hearing aids that were released for sale.  You will be able to adjust the volume up or down but if your hearing loss level changes, you will have to have the manufacturer make any necessary adjustments.
·    Digital hearing aids are the most convenient type of hearing aid available today.  They will help with specific hearing problems and thus can be adjusted to meet your specific needs.  These hearing aids are comfortable to wear and the level of sound adjusts itself automatically.  However, they do cost more than the conventional or programmable hearing aid.
·    Programmable hearing aids are much more advanced than the conventional hearing aid.  This is because the volume is able to adjust itself.
·    Disposable hearing aids are not as expensive as those hearing aids that are technologically advanced.  They are similar to conventional hearing aids whenever it comes to their sound quality though.  Nevertheless, you will find that their shelf life is very short (less than 40 days).

Whenever it is time for you to head out shopping for a hearing aid, take a moment to look at hearing aid reviews.  Your next step should be to consult with an ear doctor.  They will be able to help you choose the best hearing aid for your needs, budget and lifestyle.
