Tomas Rueda has been living in Mazatlan, Sinaloa since his birth in 1941. He studied mechanical engineering in Monterrey and later acquired a master’s degree in naval architecture in Holland. He constructed boats for 10 years until he decided to move into the field of residential development. He has designing and building residential projects in Mazatlan for the past 25 years and is one of the most respected businessmen in the city.

VM: How has Mazatlan changed in the last 20 years?
It has changed so much that if you have not been back here, you will not recognize it; the most dramatic changes have occurred in the last ten years. The town has grown and developments have been built near the beach areas.
VM: What are you currently developing?
We just finished a Torre 360 -a 16-story “intelligent” building with 27 condominium units- on the beach of Sabalo Cerritos.
VM: Why did you choose to build an intelligent tower?
Because it is the most advanced construction concept in the market, and there is nothing like it in Mazatlan. One of the many amenities of the tower is that the owner can control all the utilities in the condo, including lights and air conditioning, through the internet. It will hopefully differentiate us from the rest of the projects in the area.
VM: How has the global recession affected property values in Mazatlan?
It has had a tremendous effect on the entire economy of the city. Property prices have decreased 30% from their highs that were seen two years ago. However, I do not think prices will remain low for much longer, as it is a beach locations with many attractions for visitors from around the world. I believe it is one of the best moments to invest here, especially for those who have cash sitting on the sidelines.
VM: What makes Mazatlan unique amongst other beach destinations in Mexico?
First of all, the beauty and security of our beaches; we had never have a case of a shark attack in the history of the city. In addition, the city offers tropical temperature, the tallest natural light house in the world, the longest boardwalk in Mexico (over 15 miles), the historic town center, the cathedral, and best of all - the warmth of its people.
VM: Have more Americans and Canadians moved here in the last few years?
This is one of the biggest changes in the city. As people have discovered our city, more have invested in the area and made Mazatlan their permanent home. In the last ten years, I would say that the Canadian and American population here has at least doubled in size.
VM: Do you recommend the port as a retirement destination?
Without a doubt; where else in the world will you be able to find a beach location with friendly people, great food and transportation, and affordable prices of living.
VM: What changes do you foresee in Mazatlan over the next few years?
I think that undoubtedly, the city will keep growing and improving its infrastructure. I think that the main changes will be seen in the Sabalo Cerritos beach area of town, which is rapidly changing and becoming one of the more popular living locations. Even though there are already more than 20 new condominium towers on this beach area, many more will be built in the next few years around the city’s 2 marinas.
