Retirement Abroad- The Health Factor in Choosing Your LocationPosted by: Mary Albert in MyBlog on Jun 7, 2011 Tagged in: Untagged

So many active adults consider moving abroad, and there are a lot of different elements that go into the final decision. Retirement in a new country and culture can be a fun experience for anyone. However, choosing the best destination is always going to be an important part of the process. I wrote a blog awhile back on senior safety and security when family is far away, and one of the main concerns is health and wellbeing. Have you considered your health issues or potential issues in regards to your chosen destination?
I don't mean that your state of health should dictate your exact location. I simply want you to explore the possibility that your health needs may require a certain level of care and that you need to make sure that it is available. It might be ideal to buy a home in the British Virgin Islands, but if the medical care isn't there, for example, you might need to reconsider your location. Unless you have the financial ability to travel for medical care, having it close by is always an important element.
If you need a good cardiologist, for example, you will want to choose a location that has one within a reasonable distance. The last thing that you want is to have a heart problem flare up and be 2000 miles away from the specialist that you need. It certainly isn't fun to think about your health needs when you are choosing your retirement location, but it will make you feel more secure and give you the relaxing, enjoyable retirement that you have been searching for. Living abroad in retirement is a growing trend and is definitely something to be enjoyed. However, it will be better enjoyed when you have the peace of mind of being close to the medical services that you might need.
If you have yet to develop any health conditions or consistent need for medical attention, you're lucky. However, you'll want to think about the potential of a medical need in the future, as well. In a perfect world, you could live wherever you wanted in the world because you are going to be healthy and happy forever. That isn't the case, though, so it's important to explore medical services before choosing a retirement location abroad.
