5 things to know before hosting an international volunteer

“Home is the place where, when you have to go there, they have to take you in.” - Robert Frost quotes. There are many people out there who love meeting new friends and making connections. They don’t get satisfied with meeting only people of their area and sometimes they choose to broaden their horizons by making international friends. Becoming a host of a home stay is a one of the ways for him/her to meet people from different cultures. A home stay is a form of tourism or study abroad program whereby the host offers a bedroom(s) to foreigners who want to learn the local culture and languages. Most hosts are paid directly or indirectly by the international volunteer. Although in others, the host offers their home for free. There is a slim profit margin to be made in hosting a volunteer as such many hosts due it not to make money but to expose themselves to new cultures. The main benefits of hosting international volunteers or students are: meeting new people; experiencing and exchanging cultures; broadening world views; long term friendships and tax cuts (in the USA). Before hosting a volunteer here are a couple of things the hosts should consider:

It was a hot but beautiful day! We were out and about investigating land and available properties for purchase. We decided to go check out a friends farm in the El Pilar area of Belize just outside of Bullet Tree Village. And Wow are we glad we did. We were hot and tired, but anxious to see the landscape of Belize and show our friends - future expatriates from Arizona - what Belize has to offer. We had the pleasure of viewing a beautiful farm, peering over the horizon at the magnificent views, and meeting a couple Belizean cowboys who showed us their gracious hospitality.

-Market 'Feel'  PMA

Things here are pretty optimistic and no doubt that a "PMA",  Positive Mental Attitude, is a very important factor. The world economy and the political situation dampened the enthusiasm that was prevalent here for the past decade, but overall most people here are pretty upbeat. It is pretty hard not to be actually. The sand is still white, water is still aqua blue, the weather is warm and sunny, the people are still as friendly as ever and economically the island will do well this coming year. The losses that were experienced due to the economic and political situation this year will fade. You only need to look at the expansion of the Royal Caribbean cruise ship
dock and the opening, on November 20th this year, of the new Carnival Cruise Line port to see how life can spring right back to normal.

Living a multinational lifestyle has many wonderful benefits, but it also brings unique challenges. The complexity of managing financial wealth certainly tops the list of these challenges. This article touches on some of the most critical financial considerations for American expatriates, including banking, investment management, taxes, and real estate.

Managing cash and banking needs while living abroad can be difficult. To make things easier and less costly, expats should maintain two bank accounts. The first should be a U.S.-based account with offerings like credit and debit cards, and convenient web features like online bill-pay and money transfers. The second should be at a local bank in the resident country to be used for day-to-day living expenses– this account should hold a minimum reserve of 3-6 months of living expenses. Some foreign banks offer U.S. dollar-denominated accounts, a terrific option for expats as they can simplify and lower the cost of foreign currency exchange.

By Jim Scherrer,
Let’s start out by assuming that you’re a pretty savvy investor; your 401k, IRA, or personal investments have kept up with the S&P 500 average during the past ten years and you’ve lost only about 35% of your life’s savings! Did you realize that the Mexican Exchange Traded Fund (EWW) which represents the Mexican stock market, even though it was annihilated during the current recession along with all other markets throughout the world (but is recovering rapidly), has advanced by 200% during the same time frame? In other words, $100 invested in the S&P 500 in 1999 would now be worth $65, whereas if it were invested in the Mexican EWW fund it would now be worth $200. Please refer to the ten year graph in order to see the comparisons between these two areas of investment and perhaps you can speculate as to where might be the best market to place your next bet!

Our first album of photos from this trip was on the Veracruz area. We started about 10:30am on Fri. April 17,09 and made better time than expected on the excellent highways between Guadalajara and Mexico City and therefore decided to push on to Puebla on day one. Five O'Clock, through Mexico City was a challenge. We had never driven through it before but after about 2 ½ hours, darkness had fallen and we were on the outskirts and our way to Puebla.

Boomers Living Abroad

The number of Americans and Canadians living abroad, by today's count approximately 7 million (according to The Washington Post), is twice the population of Chicago and greater than that of 33 U.S. States. A number that has grown steadily over the past decade, and it is expected to more than double within ten years. In the next 20 years, 100 million baby boomers, from the USA and Canada, are going to retire. Five million baby boomers turn age 60 each year, Ten Thousand per day, Eight per minute, and scores of them are purchasing property abroad as vacation homes or investment homes. Naturally, many of them are auditioning these homes for potential primary retirement residences.
