Uruguay is located in southern South America, bordering the South Atlantic Ocean, between southern Brazil and northern Argentina.
At a latitude of approximately 30-35 S, it has a southern latitude equivalent to Atlanta, Georgia or Los Angeles, California
Land
Uruguay is the second smallest country in South America, slightly smaller than the state of Washington. It has a land area of 173,620 sq km. It consists mostly of rolling plains and low hills, with a fertile coastal lowland. The lowest point is 0 meters at the Atlantic Ocean, the the highest is Cerro Catedral at 514 meters.
The climate is warm temperate, with freezing temperatures almost unknown. Average temperatures range from 43° F to 59° F. Rainfall is quite evenly distributed throughout the year. The peak summer months of January and February are the time when neighboring Argentines throng Uruguay's beach resorts.

While such wine drinks as clericó (white wine and fruit juice), medio y medio (sparkling wine and fruit juice), and beer (Uruguyan-made Pilsen) are popular, there is really only one drink: Mate.
Yerba Mate
The yerba is the herb—the powdered tea leaves. The mate is the gourd that holds the tea. And a bombilla is a metal—usually silver—straw that filters out the tea leaves, allowing you to enjoy the strong, bitter and healthy national drink.
Asado (grilled beef), parrilla (a mixed grill served on a platter), chivitos (thin slices of steak cooked over charcoal on an open grill and served as an open-faced sandwich—with lots more stuff on top and served on a large platter with cold salads), dulce de leche (a sweet sauce made by boiling milk and sugar down to a thick paste—similar to caramel).
